Some of the popular St. Lucia artists!

Derek Walcott, one of the popular West Indian poets of today was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1992. He was born at Castries, educated at St Mary's College. He writes both plays and prose in standard English and in West Indian dialect.

Alcina Nolley a former art teacher, paints six hours each day, gives private art lessons, creates books, notecards and runs her own gallery. Her paintings depict the island vegetation and the island women. She's created a line of enamel jewelry, fabric Christmas ornaments, and "character bowls" ~ pottery with personality. Her black copper enamel bowls sport clay feet and have an uncanny human attitudes.

Daniel Jean-Baptiste, born in the tiny fishing village of Choiseul, began capturing the cobalt blue sea with watercolors. Jean-Baptiste moved to Canada when he was 15 and has been back and forth between the two countries ever since. He was introduced to silk painting and eventually formed his own display company, Cobalt Illustrations, producing hand painted silk banners for shopping centers and real estate developers. Even when Jean-Baptiste is in Canada his work continues to be inspired by the tropical beauty of the Caribbean.

Victor Eudovic has been carving wood longer than anyone else on St. Lucia. At his studio, he uses the wood grain to produce smooth, abstract forms that reach out to be touched. Each of his magnificent creations is unique and he prefers to work with ancient stumps and roots found deep within the rainforest, but he also works with mahogany, teak, Laurier Mabouey and red and white cedar.

Michelle Elliot, a St. Lucia artist, crafts hand-painted pottery and uses bright, colorful pastels to portray St. Lucian life. Elliot exhibits and sells her work at the Coal Pot, the restaurant she and her French husband, Xavier, own and manage. At the Coal Pot, Michelle is the hostess and Xavier is the chef and they feature fresh Caribbean foods with simple, yet exquisite, French cooking methods.
